Maurice DELCOURT
Maurice Delcourt (1877-1916) made a name for himself at a young age, first as an illustrator, and then as a fine carver of color woodcuts. This was a technique practiced by few artists in France. Thanks to the popularity of Japanese prints in Paris, his work gained attention quickly. While it is not clear quite how Delcourt made his way into the art world, it is clear that some early illustrations, as early as 1896, must have been the necessary calling card for the artist. Most of his compositions focus on elegant women, whose elaborate dress is often simplified in line reminiscent of symbolist artists of his time. Because he wasn’t a very prolific printmaker, printed in small editions and died at a young age in the First World War, his work has become scarce.
