Henri-Gabriel IBELS

Henri-Gabriel Ibels (1867-1936) did receive some formal training, but he quickly made his own way in the Parisian art world of the 1890’s.  His talent for witty drawing, and his great sense of dramatic color provided him with a means to make a living from a young age.  An illustrator at heart, Ibels painted, designed posters, did some writing and was a fairly prolific printmaker.  Though mostly focused on commercial work, such as poster designs and theater programs, Ibels did on occasion draw fine art lithographs.  He was one of the founding members of the Nabis group.  He is today remembered for his whimsical depictions of actors, theater scenes, clowns, socialite Parisians and other assorted characters seen on the capital city’s streets and in its establishments.
